Why We Wander
“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us” – Anonymous
While I wish we knew who penned those words, it is almost better not to know. It makes it feel as if any one of us could have spoken them. It certainly could be a motto for my husband and me. One may think that we travel an excessive amount of time. It seems, to some, as if we are somewhere new every weekend. The latter is mostly true, but excess is in the eye of the beholder. When I worked with teenagers at a local youth center a number of years ago, the kids had a saying and I’m sure you remember: “YOLO!” - You only live once.
This has never felt more important than it has since the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer this past October. You see, we love to take spontaneous weekend trips and that has been a little more difficult these last few months. Still, the desire to seek out the small joys, the hidden corners, the moments that remind us we’re alive - that hasn’t gone away.
Because of that desire, I’m creating this gift for you.
Here, I’ll share stories about past (and future) weekend wanderings in the hope that they’ll inspire your own - whether that’s exploring your hometown, taking a short drive, or stretching into a long weekend getaway. I’ll include tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way, and yes, even the lessons learned the hard way.
These weekend wanderings will cover everything from bustling cities to quiet mountain hikes (or a beach, as my husband prefers), solo or couple escapes to whole family adventures, historic sightseeing to pure leisure, and hotel comfort to camper chaos. My goal is to help you discover what kind of adventure brings you joy. More than anything, I hope this turns into a community of shared wanderlust.
What if we live purposefully in every moment that we have breath in our lungs? To see beauty in the near and far.
Adventure awaits just beyond the familiar.
Let’s make this a weekend well wandered!
